The Lady Indians traveled to Windsor to take on the Dukes Tuesday afternoon and returned to Courtland with a 3-0, shut-out victory.
The team rode the right arm of Kelby Lewis, who surrendered only 2 hits over 6 innings, while striking out three and walking one Duke. Lewis finished strong, putting down the Dukes in order in the 6th on three pitches.
The Indians got the only run they would need in the top of the 5th on a double off the bat of Madison Cabell, plating Courtney Greene. Greene had led the inning off with a walk and then stole second base. Kaylee Edwards and Greene would score the other two Indian runs in the 6th, when the Lady Indians sent 7 batters to the plate and rattled off 4 hits, three of them with 2 outs.
“The girls were really patient today, we went deep into the count a bunch of times,” said Head Coach Susan Melbye. “It was great to see the girls really work their at-bats and wait for a quality pitch to hit. Our pitch selection is getting better, we’re seeing the ball better and Kelby’s pitching is hitting its stride. Today was a good day to be a Southampton Indian. We just have to continue to get better every day, every pitch, every at-bat and when it all shakes out at the end of the season, I think that we’ll be in good shape with Conference 25.”
For the Dukes, Brooke Sutphin pitched 7 innings and only 2 of the runs were earned. Kelsey Shaffer drew two walks.
The Lady Indians are 5-1 and the Lady Dukes are 6-2.
