COURTLAND—A car accident on Governor Darden Road near Courtland resulted in two fatalities, said Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the vehicle was Richard S. Doughtie, 51, and the passenger was Eugenie R. Doughtie, 54, both of Courtland. They were pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Medical Examiners Office in Norfolk. Investigation of the accident revealed the vehicle ran off the road to the right and the driver overcorrected and lost control. Both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The sheriff’s office was notified of the accident on Sunday at 7:02 p.m.
