Virginia’s sad chapter

While it is only in the early stages, the trial of former Governor Bob McDonnell has already exposed a dark and nasty side of his time in office that only a short time ago would have seemed preposterous. Tuesday’s first day of testimony in the former governor’s federal corruption trial has already produced allegations of a horribly broken marriage between he and the former first lady, a “friend” in Johnny Williams who Maureen McDonnell allegedly claimed filled the void in her personal life as well as allegedly giving thousands of dollars in improper gifts to the first family, and the McDonnell’s daughter who broke down on the stand when questioned by federal prosecutors about the funding for her wedding. Regardless of the trial’s outcome, it will end what is indeed a sad chapter in Virginia’s long political history.
