According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, about 60 percent of individuals 65-years-old will require some type of long-term care services during their lifetime. Over 40 percent will receive care in a nursing home for at least a short period of time.

That said, residents of Western Tidewater will be happy to know that the Courtland Health and Rehabilitation Center and Southampton Memorial Hospital’s East Pavillion were named two of the top nursing homes in the state by U.S. News and World Report. According to the annual assessment, only 25 percent of nursing homes nationwide achieve this honor.

Since 1983, U.S. News and World Report has been providing education, health, finance, travel, car and public service rankings to serve as a valuable reference and improve the quality of life of its readers. To create the list, the multi-platform publisher uses data from the Center for Medical and Medicaid Service, assigning an overall rating of one to five stars to each nursing home based on ratings in several categories, including safety, health inspections, nurse staffing and quality care.

Both the Courtland Health and Rehabiilitation Center and East Pavilion received a five star ranking in this year’s report.

The rankings encompass nearly 16,000 nursing homes nationwide that provide care to 3.3 million Americans, and are available at http://health.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes. Through a searchable database, uses can find each facility’s health and fire violations, performance in important clinical categories and how much time nursing staff spends with residents.

The Courtland Health and Rehabilitation Center also won the Turnaround Facility of the Year Award, presented by its parent company, Community Health Systems.
