The Southampton Academy Lady Raiders run-ruled the Halifax Academy Vikings on Monday afternoon, 16-3. The game was called after five innings, as the home team had more than a 10-run lead.

The 16-run explosion was a season-high for the Lady Raiders, who plated seven runs in the second inning and six runs in the third.

Senior Brooke Mizelle did a little bit of everything on the field, going 2 for 4 at the plate and knocking in a team-high four RBIs. She also pitched two innings, striking out the side in both frames. Mizelle allowed only one hit before being pulled in the third inning, improving her season ERA to a stellar 0.61.

Freshman Kelly Ferguson allowed the only three Vikings runs to score in 1/3 of an inning, raising her season ERA to 16.80. She made up for it in the batter’s box, though, driving in two RBIs on two hits.

Two more pitchers combined to sit down ten Vikings’ batters, and did not allow another run on the afternoon. Meanwhile, every Lady Raider reached base at least once, and all but one scored a run.

The team also played in Richmond over the weekend, taking part in the Courgar-Saint North-South Challenge to Strike Out Cancer hosted by Collegiate and St. Catherine’s School. The Lady Raiders won both games of the tournament, using a four-run first inning to dispatch Liberty Christian Academy of Lynchburg, and two five-run innings to beat Paul VI Catholic High School.

Mizelle, Kara Beth Poole and Ashten Hinkle were named to the all-tournament team. Poole was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the win over the Panthers, and Mizelle pitched a complete game. Hinkle, meanwhile, scored four runs in the two contests.

The Lady Raiders were back in action on Tuesday evening, traveling to Nansemond Suffolk Academy. Results were not available before deadline, however. They’ll wrap up this week’s portion of the schedule with a home game against Brunswick Academy on Thursday. First pitch will come at 4:30 p.m., with Mizelle scheduled to pitch once again.
