ISLE OF WIGHT
Seven innings of regulation baseball between the Tidewater Academy Warriors and the home Isle of Wight Academy Chargers were not enough on Wednesday. Knotted up at 5-all in the top of the eighth, the Warriors struck first in plating two runs.

Isle of Wight had three outs left to salvage its come-back attempt. Bryan Johnson led off the inning with a single, and after stealing both second and third base, he scored on a wild pitch by Tidewater’s Hunter Buhls. He’d just struck out both batters he faced in the bottom of the seventh.

Jacob Mintz followed that up with a single, and a wild pitch and a stolen base got him to third. The next batter, Carson Robertson, tied it up when his double plated Mintz.

With Robertson on second, Noah Pye stepped up to the plate with a chance to earn himself a win on the mound. He’d come in to relieve Rylee Williams in the top of the sixth, when the Warriors were up 5-2.

Buhls had yet to record an out that inning, and he wouldn’t start with Pye, whose walk-off single earned himself and the team the 8-7 win.

Johnson was 4 for 5 on the day; he scored three runs and had four steals. Pye had four RBIs on his three-hit day.

The Warriors’ Payton Holdsworth was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs.

On Monday, the Chargers were on the road against the Hampton Roads Academy Navigators. The Chargers pulled off a 6-3 win against the larger Div. II school.

The Navigators struck first against pitcher Alec Wonders, but he was able to record four clean innings from there. This gave Isle of Wight some room to work with, as the Chargers chased Connor Pittman from the game in the top of the third after the Navigators’ pitcher gave up his third run.

Isle of Wight scored the last run it would ultimately need in the top of the fifth, and added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

Wonders had nine strikeouts on the day, but he gave up seven hits in completing the game.

Carson Robertson had two doubles and batted in a run. Jacob Mintz had two singles in three at-bats, also driving in a run. Bryan Johnson, who had a single in four at-bats, stole two bases.

Isle of Wight Academy (6-3) played Portsmouth Christian (1-8) on Thursday, in a game that ended after deadline. They host Atlantic Shores Christian (12-1) on Monday, April 20.

Tidewater Academy (6-5) played at Southampton Academy (11-1) on Thursday. They host Brunswick Academy (5-4) on Tuesday, April 21.

All games start at 4:30 p.m.
