On Saturday, May 16, from 4 to 9 p.m., the Courtland Volunteer Rescue Squad will host a dinner at the Courtland Ruritan Club, 26484 Hanging Tree Road, to raise funds for a new quick response vehicle. The current vehicle is more than 15 years old with well over 100,000 miles, according to captain Doug Bailey, and it is long past needing replaced.

“We’re trying to get funds to apply for an 80/20 grant,” he said. “The vehicle costs $50,000, and we need to have 20 percent to apply.”

He also said that the listed price of the vehicle does not include any additional costs, such as lights.

The event will coincide with the Contemporary School of Dance’s Spring Recital, which also begins at 4 p.m. in the Southampton High School auditorium. Volunteer Missi Hatfield hopes that those who attend the ballet will choose to dine with the squad, as opposed to traveling to the city and waiting to be seated during the dinner rush.

The menu will feature fried chicken, hamburgers or hot dogs, mac and cheese, green beans, dessert and a drink. Tickets are $10 per plate, and can be obtained through any volunteer or by calling the station at 653-9221; costumed dancers eat free. Meals will be available via dine in or drive through, but Hatfield wants to stress that only a limited number of tickets will be for sale at the door based on the amount of chicken they order.

“We want to have as many tickets sold the week before for the chicken count,” she said.

Sponsors of the dinner include Cypress Cove Country Club, who will handle the catering, Through the Lens of Michelle Campbell, the Courtland Ruritan Club, and the Sedley Woman’s Club, who will donate desserts.
