Four students from Southampton High School’s journalism class will attend Yearbook East, a camp sponsored by Walsworth Yearbook, publisher of the school’s yearbooks. The camp will be July 20-23 at James Madison University, and will give the students a chance to learn the intricacies of the yearbook creation process.
“We’re very excited about this particular opportunity for students, and we hope that they’re the first of many to come,” said Superintendent Dr. Alvera J. Parrish.
Seniors Alexandra Pasley and Brooklyn Carpenter and juniors Cassidy McLaine and Layla Freeman, will take journalism classes next year, and are actively involved in photography according to their teacher Melissa Edwards.
“Because we have two seniors and two juniors, we’ll have a good balance so that we don’t have to necessarily go every year, and they can come back and teach it [to their peers],” Edwards said.
At the four-day camp, students will learn basic yearbook design and current trends; photography and digital guidelines; caption, headline and body copy writing; computer technology and file management; theme and ladder development; basic and advanced Adobe InDesign and Online Design 2016; and marketing and budget guidelines.
They’ll also hear from advisers and editors about leadership roles and how to keep their staff motivated.
