Welcome, support teachers in their quest

School divisions across Western Tidewater and even throughout Virginia and the rest of the country will soon begin ramping up preparations for the new school year. One of the important tasks is to ensure there are enough teachers.

Earlier this week, for example, Franklin City Public Schools not only had its new faculty in line, but also treated them to lunch and a pep talk.

Both Supt. Willie Bell and School Board Chairwoman Edna King were especially encouraging in their remarks. They spoke of their confidence that the school system will improve, and that the teachers themselves will be supported.

We believe they are sincere, and enthusiastically join them in wishing the new employees the strength, endurance and patience — lots and lots of patience — to daily face their mission to teach.

Another group that needs to welcome and uphold faculty is the parents. Strong involvement in their children’s learning can only reap positive benefits, especially when the students realize that their parents and teachers genuinely have their best interests at heart.

Teaching, like so many other professions, can be a noble calling, and it’s one that we all should honor in every way.
