Isle of Wight Academy running back Donald King has been named the Western Tidewater Player of the Week for his impact play against the Portsmouth Christian Patriots this past Friday night. In the 45-8 win, the junior registered three carries for 90 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 39 yards for another score.

“It’s exciting to be out there with my teammates and to be able to get the win,” King said

Through two games this season, King, who led the Bay Rivers District in rushing as a sophomore at Smithfield, has racked up 115 yards rushing on only 10 carries — a 10.5 yards per carry average.

“I have to give credit to my offensive line,” King said. “They’re giving me the holes [to run through].”

King rushed for a more than 2,700 yards and 34 touchdowns in his career, and he hopes to remain a focal point of the Chargers’ spread offense this season.

“My freshman year, I was able to get over 1,000 yards rushing, and then last year I went over 2,000,” King said. “I just hope to keep that going.”

Honorable mention for Western Tidewater’s Player of the Week includes Franklin running back Quayshaun Jefferson, who rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Arcadia; Windsor quarterback Keshawn Reid, who accounted for 158 yards of total offense and two touchdowns rushing in a loss to Nandua; and Southampton running back Harrison Ehrenzeller, who ran for 81 yards and a touchdown in a win over Charles City.
