Southampton running back Harrison Ehrenzeller has been named the Western Tidewater Player of the Week after leading the Indians to a 38-0 win over Surry on Homecoming night. The senior rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns, narrowly edging his teammate Curtis Smith — 66 yards and two touchdowns — for the honor.

“We went to our power running game, and those guys did a good job behind some good blocking,” Southampton head coach Willie Gillus said after the game. “We had to get better at being physical because we have big, strong guys. We’re not going to try to finesse you. That’s Southampton football. This program has been built on strong running backs and dominant offensive lines, and that hasn’t changed.”

Ehrenzeller’s first touchdown came at the end of the first quarter — a crucial point in the game. A fumbled punt attempt gave Surry the ball inside the redzone, but threw an interception on the very next play. Southampton then went on a six-play drive, capped off with an Ehrenzeller 4-yard scoring run, to go up 16-0.

Honorable mention for the Western Tidewater Player of the Week includes Smith; Franklin running backs Quayshawn Jefferson and JaVonte Baker, who combined for 284 yards and three touchdowns in a 20-12 win over Sussex Central; and Isle of Wight running back Donald King, who scored three touchdowns in a 55-7 win over Fuqua.
