The Virginia Department of Transportation had a public hearing on Wednesday in the Southampton County Administration Building to show its latest plans for a proposed replacement bridge on General Thomas Highway over the Nottoway River. Twelve people attended the hour-long open-house presentation, which gave residents an opportunity to review the project exhibits on display, meet with VDOT representatives and provide input.

The proposed project, which has not yet been funded, would replace the structurally deficient bridge with one that meets the current design standards. It would also include roadway improvements to the approaches and a new storm water management facility.

“Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2019 if funds can be found,” said VDOT Senior Public Affairs Specialist Tiffany Whitfield.

Those who were unable to attend the hearing are asked to submit comments on the proposal by Monday, Feb. 29, to project manager Diane Geouge by email at n.geouge@vdot.virginia.gov, referencing “Route 671 over Nottoway River Bridge Replacement Comment” in the subject line.
