The Charles City Panthers returned to Southampton High Indians’ territory on Friday evening, only to lose 52-0. This was the finish to the game they started last week before rain and lightning cut the game short after the first quarter.

From the stands it seemed that the opportunities for Charles City Panthers to score were few and far between on Friday, as the Indians took advantage of every opportunity in play. At five minutes after kick-off in the second quarter, the home team had already scored its first touchdown. The next followed with 7:28 left, putting 14-0 on the scoreboard. Still another goal came with 4:34 remaining, bringing the score to 20-0. Finally, with 56.9 second left, the next touchdown brought the total to 27-0.

The Indians kept their momentum going in the third quarter and quickly climbed higher to 36-0.

With the clock at 9:00, an injury to a Panther — the cause yet unknown — put the game on hold for several minutes for him to be treated and taken away by ambulance. The Indians later scored with 4:53 left, bringing the tally to 39-0.

Come the fourth quarter, with 9:17 left, the next Indians’ touchdown total was 45-0.

Finally, with 47 seconds to go, Southampton High players got their last goal, bringing them to the 52-0 victory.

Afterward, SHS head football coach Littleton Parker said his team played well.

“The kids responded well and were prepared,” he said, adding they had “accomplished what they had been working on.”

Parker added his sympathies for the injured Panther, saying how much he hated for that to happen to the player — or anyone else for that matter.

The Indians travel to Colonial Heights and face off against the Minutemen on Friday, Sept. 15. Game time will be at 7 p.m.
