GATES, N.C. — Elsie Lawrence Tyler, 86, of 1052 NC 37 North, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Virginia.
Mrs. Tyler was born in Gates County on Oct. 5, 1931, and was the daughter of the late William Henry and Mabel Watson Lawrence.
A homemaker, in earlier years she had worked in the office of the Gates County Clerk of Superior Court, and as a rural carrier for the Gates Post Office.
A faithful member of Reynoldson Baptist Church and the Gates Prayer Group, she had been active with the Gates Emergency Ministries (GEMS). Enjoyments included basket making, gardening, working with the Athletic Booster Club, playing cards with her Bridge group and watching Duke Basketball.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Warren “Dick” Tyler; an infant daughter; sisters, Alma Lawrence and Bernice Strickler; brothers, Doug, Billy and Watson Lawrence; and by a son-in-law, Carlton Boyce.
Surviving are her children, Debra Boyce, Amy Seiling and husband, William, and Perry Tyler and wife, Lisa, all of Gates; and Tim Tyler and wife, Mechelle, of Dexter, Georgia; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be on Tuesday at 4 p.m., in Reynoldson Baptist Church, and will be conducted by the Revs. Cody Brinkley and Billy Presley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to GEMS, or to one’s favorite charity.
