The Peggy Wilkens Gym at Franklin High School on Wednesday was packed to capacity as the super day battle between the basketball teams for junior varsity, varsity girls and boys were played.

The girl’s game opened with the Lady Broncos taking a quick 17-8 lead for the first quarter. Jamia Flythe connected on two 3-pointers for the home team. The Lady Broncos used a full court press that resulted in many turnovers and points. As the second quarter ended the home team was up 33-23.

After the half, the Lady Broncos hit a low point as the Indians’ defense held them to eight points while their offense stepped up to hit 15 points.

For the final quarter of play, the Lady Broncos held on to their lead to record a 54-47 win over the Lady Indians.

In scoring for the Lady Broncos, Jamia Flythe led with 19 points, followed by Tayana Rogers with 17 points.

For the Lady Indians, they had three players in double figures. They were led by K. Hite with 19 points, followed by J. Green and S. Sledge both with 11 points apiece.

Franklin High School Lady Bronco head coach Mona Sumblin said after the game, “It is always a battle with Southampton because we are rivals — but we are family — and it will be a hard-fought battle. Honestly, the game should not have been that close if we were playing the kind of ball that we are capable of playing. We got to go back and work on defense, work on moving our feet and drills on layups.”
