William Fricke scored 14 points to lead Isle of Wight Academy as the Chargers walloped StoneBridge, 53-47, here on Friday.

The Cavaliers’ Noah Fesl had 16 points and was the only StoneBridge player in double figures.

IWA jumped out to an early lead, 18-13, in the first quarter on the strength of seven of Russ Wells’ nine points on the night.

The Chargers (11-9, 6-3 Metro Athletic Conference) matched each of three Stonebridge second-quarter field goals with two of their own to take a 31-17 halftime lead. The Cavaliers got as close as 12 points in the third when Emani Langley’s two foul shots made the score 37-25 with 2:08 left in the period.

But IWA outscored StoneBridge 16-4 over the next 7 minutes, stretching into the fourth quarter, to keep the home team in check.

Kivinie Johnson’s two foul shots with 10.5 seconds left sealed the win for Williamsburg Christian as they pushed past Isle of Wight 59-58 here on Jan. 29.

Colby Williams’ 3-pointer with 2.4 ticks left closed it to within a point. IWA attempted to push the ball up court with fewer than 2 seconds remaining, but couldn’t get off a shot.

The Chargers had been bidding to defeat Williamsburg twice in a season for the first time since 2010. IWA topped Williamsburg 68-61 on Dec. 14.

WCA increased its record to five games above .500 at 8-13, 6-4 in the Metro Conference.

IWA led 16-13 after a period and 31-29 at halftime. A 9-point Eagles spurt in the third quarter put the Chargers behind, 43-39, with 3:08 left in that period. They would tie it again at 43 on a field goal by Grant Worthy with 1:30 left in the period, and twice more in the fourth quarter — at 51 and 53.

IWA led briefly, 55-53, when Worthy made a field goal, got fouled but missed the ensuing foul shot with 1:03 to go. Williamsburg rattled off the next six points to take a 59-58 lead with 10.5 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Williams near-heroic heave.

Worthy continues his pursuit of the Metro Conference scoring crown. He remained in second place, ahead of Fesl by a full point per game, 16.7-15.7, in last week’s scoring rankings. Things could become jumbled this week, due to Worthy’s 1-point outing on Friday versus StoneBridge, a game in which Fesl scored 16.

IWA returned to the court on Tuesday toavenge a close loss to Hampton Christian in their 7 p.m. tip against the Warriors. Denbigh Baptist visits the Chargers on Thursday for Senior Night festivities; IWA faces Atlantic Shores for the first time this season when the two teams meet in Jester Gymnasium.
