UPDATE: Drowning victim identified

COURTLAND
David Fowler Jr., 61, of Courtland, was identified by his family after his body was found in the Nottoway River around 9:30 a.m. today, July 15. This is according to Maj. Gene Drewery, spokesman for the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 4:44 p.m. on Sunday, the department had gotten a call of a fisherman who had been wading, but then had been swept away in the Nottoway River near Sebrell. Drewery stated that there was no floatation device of any kind on Fowler.
In addition to the sheriff’s office, the following agencies participated in the rescue attempt: The Virginia Game Commission; the Virginia State Police; Franklin Fire and Rescue; Courtland VFD; Courtland Rescue; Capron VFD; and Capron Rescue.
Fowler was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for official cause of death.
