ISLE OF WIGHT

Isle of Wight Academy continued its winning streak as the Chargers topped Hargrave Military Academy 33-6 here on Friday.

Colby Williams rushed for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns; backfield mate Zach Stroud ran for 144 yards and scored once.

The Chargers allowed only 28 yards of total offense and one offensive first down by the Tigers.

The teams traded opening possessions, then IWA got the ball at its own 42 after a short Hargrave punt. Runs by Stroud and Williams resulted in a 1-yard scamper by the latter to open the scoring.

After another HMA punt, IWA got the ball back near midfield and scored again on a 25-yard run by Williams. Quarterback Cade White found wideout Odin Bristol for the conversion to make it 14-0 with 14 seconds left in the opening quarter.

White’s first interception of three in the game cut short the next IWA drive. Their next possession resulted in a punt, then Hargrave got its first first down of the game on a 15-yard IWA penalty. Three plays later, they punted anyway, giving the Chargers the ball again.

IWA got as far as the Tigers’ 26, when a third-down heave by White was again intercepted with 1:48 remaining in the first half.

The Tigers’ signalcaller stunted their last drive of the half with his first interception. Four more Hargraves downs gave the Chargers the ball again. Buoyed by a 76-yard run by Williams, his longest of the night, IWA found the end zone again on a 5-yard run by Bristol. Jacob Chapman’s PAT made it 21-0 with 6:04 left in the period.

IWA’s next possession started on their own 20-yard line and progressed as far as the Hargrave 25, but ended on an interception. On the next play, Hargrave quarterback Mason Anderson found an open receiver in David Hubbard Jr., who ran for a touchdown to make the score 21-6 with 10:37 to play.

HMA’s first first down from scrimmage came on its next drive, though, two plays later, they would fumble the ball, giving IWA a first down at the HMA 8. Stroud the ran it in on the next play to make the score 27-6.

Hargrave’s next offensive play also resulted in a fumble, giving IWA a first down at the HMA 30. Two downs later, William scored from 24 yards out to wrap up the scoring.

After losing its first two games of the year, the Chargers bounced back with wins at Fredericksburg Christian, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Hargrave. IWA enjoys a bye week before taking on Broadwater Academy on Oct. 4 in the Charger’s homecoming game at William M. Hooper Field.
