To the Editor:

Southampton County lost one of its favorite sons this past week, Richard C. Grizzard Sr.

Born, raised and a lifelong resident of Southampton County, he was Commonwealth Attorney for Southampton County and the City of Franklin for over 35 years.

I had the honor of working with Dick for some 27 years, and the one thing that stood out was his work ethic and his integrity. He worked hard every day, from early morning until late evening. The people he represented do not know and cannot appreciate the effort he put forth each day. I can assure you, the county and city got their money’s worth.

In court, Dick Grizzard was always prepared, whether it was a speeding case or a murder trial, and he had a mind like a steel trap; he never forgot anything. He treated everyone the same, with tough love. He was a tough prosecutor and his reputation was known statewide as an aggressive prosecutor with highest integrity. He came by his toughness honestly. He was a Marine and a true patriot.

A person like Dick Grizzard comes through once in a great while; he was and is a legend.

Sarah, his wife of 58 years, stood by him over the years and took good care of him during his illness. Sarah, we thank you and our prayers are with you and your family.

On behalf of the citizens of Southampton County and the City of Franklin, we thank Dick Grizzard for a job well done; we are proud of him and appreciate his dedication to the community. Dick will never be forgotten. He has been replaced by a good person, but his boots will never be filled.

Rest in peace, my brother.
