BOYKINS — Dr. Carolyn Carter Modlin passed away in Virginia Beach General on Oct. 21, 2020. She was born on June 27, 1951 in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Marie Jarratt Carter and William Wood Carter.

Carolyn attended Hugenot High School, then Radford University. She received her master’s degree at Virginia State University and her doctorate at Virginia Tech. She dedicated her life to her family, education and serving her community. She served many years with Greensville County Public Schools as a teacher, vice principal and principal. Carolyn was a professor at Chowan University, a member of Southampton County school board and mayor of the town of Boykins. She was a long-time member of Boykins Methodist Church, where she was organist and served on several committees.

Carolyn was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time with her book club. She loved having her family and friends around her.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 46 years, Jimmy Modlin; a daughter, Dee Modlin Clary (Jason) of Rawlings, Virginia; a son, Jim Modlin (Cassie) of Sedley; and her godsons, Robert Poland (April) and Richard Poland (Skylar). Her grandchildren, Parker Collins Clary, Dawson Cole Clary, Carter James Modlin and Caroline Amelia Modlin were the love of her life.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2 p.m., at Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins.
