The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting and attempted robbery that took place at the JIA Inc. in Boykins on Sept. 11, according to spokesman Maj. Camden Cobb.

At approximately 2:21 a.m., deputies had responded to a call at the site, a 24-hour gaming establishment in the 32000 block of Main Street. As first reported, detectives began to investigate and determined that three black males arrived in a dark-colored sedan and approached the rear entrance of the business one person at a time. After the first man entered the business, a second came to the door pointing a handgun at the clerk while the third suspect remained outside.

The clerk saw the second man approaching with his gun drawn and pulled out his own weapon at which time the suspect shot the clerk one time, striking his left arm. The victim was unable to shoot his weapon. He was later transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

After the shot was fired, all three suspect fled to the vehicle and left the area. They were not able to take anything from the business.

“We are asking for assistance from the community,” Cobb said in a statement to media. “Additional information is being released in hopes that it will generate new leads in the case.”

The suspect vehicle is described as a dark-colored four-door sedan, newer model with a white tag displayed on the front of the vehicle.
