Severe thunderstorm warning expires

Earlier: A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for central Isle of Wight County and northeastern Southampton County until 6:45 p.m.

At 6:16 p.m., a severe thunderstorm was located over Ivor, moving northeast at 40 miles per hour. Hazards include 60-mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Minor damage to vehicles is possible; expect wind damage to trees and powerlines.

The storm will be near Smithfield around 6:35 p.m.

People should remain alert for a possible tornado. If you spot a tornado or get a tornado warning, move to a small, central room or basement in a sturdy structure.

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
