The 29th annual Franklin-Southampton County Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament set for May 10 at Cypress Cove Country Club is looking to draw participants and will include a key new feature.

“This is our 29th tournament, so we’ve been fortunate to have it well-supported throughout the years, and it’s a lot of fun to get businesses together and be able to showcase what they have as hole sponsors and that type of thing,” Chamber Executive Director Teresa Beale said. “This year we’re having something new that will be fun for the tournament.”

She said the event will be kicked off with the Nottoway House Furniture Golf Ball Drop.

“We’re going to be selling numbered golf balls, and I’m not sure of the logistics yet, but we’re going to have those dumped onto the putting green, and the one that goes in a designated hole — it’s sort of a random thing — will win a $500 gift certificate to the Nottoway House Furniture,” she said. “It’s going to be a really fun addition to the tournament.”

The tournament, which will feature a modified, four-person Captain’s Choice

post-flighted format, is limited to 20 teams, with first priority given to sponsors in order received.

In terms of teams that have signed up, Beale said the tournament was not close to its limit yet, but people are filtering in.

“People are starting to sign up,” she said April 26. “We’ve changed some of our software, so we were able to offer online registration this year for the first time.”

That registration is possible at www.fsachamber.com.

Sign-in, lunch and range balls will be provided at noon, the golf ball drop will happen at 1 p.m., the shotgun start to the tourney will be at 1:10 p.m. and award cookout and raffle drawing will come around 5:30 p.m.

Beale said social distancing will be required at the event, and the awards dinner has been moved outside to also help lower the risk of transmission of the novel coronavirus.
