Isle of Wight Academy’s (IWA) baseball team continued its hot hitting with a 12-7 win over host Norfolk Academy on April 23 to begin its season 4-0.

IWA broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the sixth when Jake Lineberry grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing two teammates to score.

After a scoreless first inning for the Chargers, the Bulldogs pushed three runs across in the bottom of the frame. Not to be denied, Isle of Wight opened up scoring in the second inning when Christian Biernot singled, scoring two runs. 

IWA notched six runs in the second inning on singles by James Thompson, Biernot, Trent Holland and Kody Kosiorek and a home run by Trevor Mason. 

Norfolk Academy had knotted the game up 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Matt Camardella singled, scoring one run. 

Sophomore Ian Rickmond took the win for Isle of Wight, allowing two hits and one run over two innings, striking out three. 

IWA visited Richmond Christian School on April 22, crushing the Warriors 20-0 in four innings. 

Biernot was 2-for-5, scoring three times and driving in a pair of runs. Mason was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI. Junior Jacob Chapman was 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in four teammates. Rickmond was 1-for-2 and drove in a trio of Chargers.

Isle of Wight defeated Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School 20-3 on April 20. 

IWA baseball was ranked third in the season’s initial Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state poll.

The Chargers were ranked at least a spot ahead of traditional rivals Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Atlantic Shores Christian School. Also in Division II, IWA was behind top-ranked Greenbrier Christian Academy, which Isle of Wight faces later this season, and Highland School, of Warrenton. IWA was also ranked seventh among all Virginia independent schools in state polling.

The Chargers were scheduled to enjoy a two-game homestand this past week with afternoon games April 27 and 29 versus Brunswick and Amelia academies, respectively.

The Charger softball squad went to 1-3 on the season with an April 22 home conference loss versus Southampton Academy, 10-1.

The Lady Chargers were set to host Brunswick on April 27 and Amelia on April 29. Games were scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

The IWA soccer team opened its season against Brunswick, defeating the visitors 11-0 April 21 at home.

The Chargers were scheduled to host Kenston Forest School on April 28 at 4:30 p.m.

The IWA golf team was set to return to the links April 27 and 29 with matches at Providence Golf Club in Richmond and Brunswick Country Club, respectively.
