DREWRYVILLE – Reginald Thomas “Tommy” Upson Jr., 79, of Drewryville, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 with his family at his side. He was born in Blackstone, Virginia to the late Reginald Thomas Upson and Hazel Gamble Upson. He was preceded in death by a sister, Donna Kay Upson. Mr. Upson is survived by his wife, of 52 years, Sandra Felton Upson; son, Reginald Thomas Upson III (Leslie) of Richmond; daughter, Leslie Upson Bradbury (Mark) of Boone, North Carolina; grandchildren, William Upson Bradbury, Caroline Felton Bradbury, Reginald
Thomas Upson IV, and Lauren Blaire Upson. He is also survived by a large and supportive extended family. He graduated from Ferrum Junior College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Tommy taught shop and agriculture and coached in Southampton and Sussex County public schools for his entire 36-year career. He played an active role in the Drewryville Community, serving in Volunteer Fire Department, Ruritan Club and the Drewryville United Methodist Church. Before his health declined people in the community always called on Tommy when they needed help. He enjoyed watching his beloved Virginia Tech Hokies, spending time on his farm in Blackstone and trips to the Outer Banks. Tommy always emphasized the importance of a good education to his children and grandchildren and was very proud of their successes. He relished the opportunity to watch his grandchildren play sports. Tommy will be missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Kindred Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Tommy over his last few months.
Due to COVID, a graveside funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 at Drewryville Cemetery, 23008 Drewry Road, Drewryville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department or to Drewryville United Methodist Church or Drewryville Cemetery Fund.
Owen Funeral Home, Jarratt, Virginia was in charge of arrangements.
