A Southampton County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a two-vehicle accident June 6 while on duty in Courtland that resulted in injuries that were not life threatening but that sent both the deputy and the other driver to the hospital.

Maj. Camden Cobb, of the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office, said that on June 6, the deputy was responding to a call from fire and rescue personnel in reference to a combative patient. The deputy was involved in a collision with another vehicle in the 22000 block of Main Street in Courtland at approximately 5:52 p.m. 

Deputy Matthew Kline was driving a Dodge Charger, and the other vehicle involved was a Honda Odyssey minivan.

Cobb said both drivers were transported to Norfolk General Hospital.

“Sheriff (Josh) Wyche spoke with the family of the second driver, and he is still in the hospital and is in stable condition,” Cobb said June 7. “The deputy involved in the crash had surgery this morning due to a fractured leg.”

Cobb noted the surgery went well and the deputy was recovering and would likely be released from the hospital in the next few days. 

“A deputy sheriff has been at the hospital to keep in touch with both drivers and their families,” Cobb said.

Kline’s wife, Keisha Kline, shared a photo June 7 on Facebook of her husband being placed into a helicopter for medical transport the day prior, and she included a brief statement with the photo.

“Matthew was injured while on duty yesterday evening,” she stated. “Please keep him in your prayers as he goes into surgery this morning.

“I’m especially appreciative of the support Southampton County Sheriff’s Office has poured over us both. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and I am so thankful.”

Cobb said, “We are hopeful for the full and speedy recovery of both individuals involved.”

He noted the Virginia State Police were called to investigate the crash.
