After 45 years in education, the number of students who have had the privilege of sitting in Luann Scott’s English classes is almost innumerable.

So, too, is the impact she has had on those students — but she may have gotten a small taste of it on June 17.

It was the day before her last official day, and as she left the school, a drive-by parade of former students awaited her in the parking lot. Some had traveled from at least four other states, and some had come from just around the corner. Some decorated their cars with glass chalk, balloons, streamers and signs. One group even had a float. 

In short — they went all out to celebrate this special teacher. It was clear Scott had taught more than just diagramming sentences to these generations of local young people.

Scott taught at Tidewater Academy for 10 years and then made the move to Isle of Wight County Schools, where she’s taught the children and even one grandchild of former students. Scott had told her daughter, Elizabeth Scott Francis, that she just wanted to see her former students when she retired. Francis took matters into her own hands, looking up former students and inviting them to invite others to a Facebook group to plan the event.

After that spectacular sendoff, Scott plans to spend more time with her family, which includes a soon-to-be-born grandchild, as well as spend more time traveling and reading.
