COURTLAND – Bernice Vick Edwards, 84, widow of Bennett Lee “B.L.” Edwards Jr., passed away Sept. 6, 2021 in her daughter’s home with her family by her side. Born in Boykins on Feb. 4, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Marvin Luther and Eunice Banty Vick. She is also predeceased by the man who raised her, James Monicure Story and a sister, Betty Vick Dinsmore.
Bernice was a beautician and owner of Bernice’s Beauty Shop in Courtland for 20 years. She also worked for the Southampton County School System for 20 years as a teacher’s aide. Bernice was a member of Courtland United Methodist Church where she was a longtime member of the choir.
Left to cherish her memory are three daughters, Vickie E. Phipps (Dale), Brenda E. Flowers (William “Tal” Murphy) and Dale E. Holt (Ricky); a son, James Kenneth “Kenny” Edwards (Marsha); 11 grandchildren, Kevin Story (Heather), Tina Clark (Jeff), Taylor Flowers (Sara), Kelly Holeman (James), Elyse Edwards (Chris), Bennett Flowers (Kelsey), Ashley Dover (Deven), Zach Edwards, Carrie Holt (Brendan), Mitch Phipps, and Brandon Phipps; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. David Henson officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home one hour prior to the service and suggests that memorial donations be made to Courtland United Methodist Church.
