Sedley Events has plans to host two separate days of a Thanksgiving meal giveaway to help senior citizens and people in need that are Sedley residents.

This event for Sedley will begin Nov. 21 and run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day. On that day, organizers will be handing out unprepared meal kits that will feed a family of up to 10 members. Each kit will include a turkey or ham, collards and kale, green beans, stuffing mix, potatoes, canned yams, gravy mix, cornbread pudding mix, dinner rolls, a pie and a one-time-use pan in which to cook the turkey or ham.

All of the items handed out on that day will be raw and have to be prepared by the recipient, except the ham, which is pre-cooked and packaged from Boar’s Head. 

On Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day, organizers will open up the firehouse in Sedley, located at 18080 Johnsons Mill Road, to serve prepared meals for either dine-in, carryout or delivery within Sedley from noon to 6 p.m. All of the same aforementioned food items will be prepared and served on this day.

Those requesting a Nov. 21 unprepared meal kit or those requesting a Nov. 25 prepared meal plate are asked to sign up for them. To sign up, call or text Sedley Events President Brandon Cook at 757-617-3878 or email him at brandoncook757@gmail.com.

For delivery, recipients are also asked to say how many plates they are requesting.

In a Nov. 16 email, Cook said that once the 50 unprepared meal kits are gone, that is it.

“We have reserved about 26 now for people that requested delivery, and we are working to try and increase our supply now,” he said Nov. 16. “We will be reserving an additional 30 kits for our prepared meal on the 25th that should feed about 300 people.”

In the release, Cook stated that he and his organization are hoping to encourage Sedley senior citizens and people in need to come out and enjoy a free meal.

“We want to target our shut-ins, people with disabilities, caretakers, financially troubled people, emotionally troubled people, anyone that cannot be with family or friends for a holiday,” he stated.

Cook explained that Sedley Events is not a religious organization, nor is it asking for any form of donations or compensation from this event. 

“We simply want to offer to spread our family and friends’ Thanksgiving meal with our neighbors,” he stated.

He noted Sedley Events has partnered with Cover 3 Foundation to better provide for Sedley residents, and his organization is also working with employees from Boar’s Head; Lee Scott, a local produce farmer; and others to offer as best as it can a fresh, quality meal.  

Christmas events are also planned in Sedley. 

Sedley Events, Sedley Recreation Association, The Sedley Women’s Club, of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, and Sedley Volunteer Fire Department are planning to host a “Sedley Hometown Christmas.” This event will take place Dec. 11 and will be filled with several different Christmas-themed activities from various organizations within the community.   

“We are planning this event now and hope to have more information as the date gets closer,” Cook stated.
