FRANKLIN – William Joseph “Billy” Umphlett, 79, passed away Jan. 19, 2022 in his home. Born and raised in Franklin, he was the son of the late Joseph Ashley Umphlett and Louise Elizabeth Carr Umphlett. He was also predeceased by an infant sister, Millicent Louise Umphlett.

Billy was a Navy veteran and a retired electrician for Newport News Shipyard with 38 years of service. He enjoyed playing the guitar, was a gun historian and enjoyed politics and American history.

Survivors include his cousins, Betty Jane Hardy, Helen K. Hill, Carlton Barden and a host of second cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27 in Wright Funeral Home with Pastor David Dillon officiating. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Rock Church of Franklin or the American Disabled Veterans.
