CHESAPEAKE – Chester Walton Burgess III, 74, of Chesapeake, passed away peacefully on Monday Feb. 7, 2022. Born in New Albany, Indiana, he was the son of the late Chester Walton Jr. and Mildred Pfeifer Burgess. He was predeceased by his first wife, Rebecca Butcher Burgess; two sons, Aaron Walton Burgess and Robert Earl Burgess.
Chester moved to Franklin in 1950. He graduated from Franklin High School and went to Elon College, majoring in chemistry. He was a middle school teacher for some time and went to work for his father-in-law, building homes. In 1980, Chester started Burgess Construction Company. In 2009, he married Jean Marie Kennedy Burgess.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Burgess; son, Joshua Wray Burgess; sister-in-law, Barbara Britton; brothers, Bill (Ann), Dennis (Emily) and Benny (Liz); as well as many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Franklin Congressional Christian Church, 412 North High Street in Franklin.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Franklin Cooperative Ministry, Franklin Experience, Boy Scouts, Alzheimer’s Association, Commonwealth Memory Care of Chesapeake and Westminster Canterbury Home Hospice.
