The 2021-22 Windsor High School varsity girls basketball team’s outstanding season came to a close Feb. 22 with a narrow 61-56 loss to visiting Brunswick High School in an evenly matched contest within the Region 2A Tournament.
The No. 6 Lady Bulldogs led throughout the game and were up by 20 points at one point, but the No. 3 Lady Dukes came roaring back to pull within two points of tying the game later on.
Windsor Head Coach Wilhelm Johns said the deciding factor in the game was free throws.
“They hit theirs, we missed ours,” he said, adding that the Lady Dukes’ slow start was the other key variable in the contest, as Brunswick led 13-3 after the first quarter, 30-18 at halftime and 47-35 after three quarters.
Leading Windsor in the game, statistically, was senior point guard Tseday Brown, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks, and sophomore center Shamyah Stephenson, who ended up with 19 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks.
Turning around the program in a big way this year, the Lady Dukes finished the season with a 17-5 overall record.
“I will remember this team as the start of something new with the Lady Dukes basketball program,” Johns said. “The future is bright, and we will continue to grow and get better. … This season was something special, but I know this is only the beginning.”
Voting on All-Region 2A accolades was set to take place Feb. 28.
