COURTLAND – Robert Wayne Pope, 75, passed away March 6, 2022. Born in Richmond and raised in Southampton County, he was the son of the late William Robert Pope and Julia Wreath Joyner Pope.
Robert was a graduate of Southampton High School and attended Paul D. Camp Community College. He worked in the accounting department of Union Camp Corporation for 34 years and another seven years for International Paper. He was a member of the Southampton County Historical Society and Agricultural and Forestry Museum running the Country Store on Heritage Day.
Robert took pride in restarting the Courtland Boy Scout Troop 211 and served as Scout Master. He also managed and maintained the Rochelle Prince House in Courtland over the years. He was a skilled furniture refinisher and wood worker.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Carol L. Pope; a daughter, Cheryl Pope Blythe; a son, Robert Wayne “Bobby” Pope Jr.; three stepchildren, Donald, Donna and Chris; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 13 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyle Green officiating. Burial will follow in Capron Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Southampton County Agricultural and Forestry Museum.
