‘Backyard Brawl’ continues on the tennis court

The famous “Backyard Brawl” that exists between the Franklin High School Broncos and the Southampton High School Indians on the gridiron and hardwood has now expanded to the tennis court.
For the 2022 season, the Southampton varsity boys tennis team won 6-1 at home against Franklin on March 16. For the rematch that was played in Franklin on April 4, the host Broncos won 6-3.
“The good thing about this rivalry — both teams and coaching staffs always conduct and show good sportsmanship,” Franklin Head Coach Frank A. Davis said.
Both singles and doubles matches were played using an eight-game pro set April 4.
In singles play, Franklin’s Xavier Perry defeated Southampton’s Miles Bland 8-3 in the No. 1 match; Franklin’s Xavion Perry defeated Southampton’s Cameron Jenkins 8-2 in the No. 2 match; Franklin’s Cameron Ridley defeated Southampton’s Gage Xinos 8-2 in the No. 3 match; Southampton’s Wyatt Jonos defeated Franklin’s Pheno Glover 8-6 in the No. 4 match; Franklin’s Jusdes James Turner defeated Southampton’s Jalen Lashley 8-1 in the No. 5 match; and Southampton’s Aman Boyd won the No. 6 match by default.
In doubles play, Franklin’s Perry and Perry defeated Southampton’s Xinos and Jenkins 8-5 in the No. 1 match; Franklin’s Ridley and Glover defeated Southampton’s Bland and Jonos 8-0 in the No. 2 match; and Southampton’s Boyd and Lashley won the No. 3 match by default.
