Capron Elementary School was the recipient of butterfly and sunflower kits again this year from International Paper.
A school press release continued by stating that International Paper works in cooperation with Celebrate Planet Earth to distribute butterfly kits to classrooms. The kits provide painted lady caterpillars, fold-out paper butterfly houses, a life cycle poster with care information, take-home activities and teachers’ guides with complete instructions for classrooms.
“Children in grades pre-K-5 at Capron Elementary School were excited to participate in this project and enjoyed observing the metamorphosis of the caterpillars into beautiful butterflies,” school officials said. “The students enjoyed the opportunity to use and develop their skills through the wonders of metamorphosis, anatomy and life cycles.”
The program also included a sunflower challenge kit that included seeds, a reproducible handout for sprouting sunflowers and a storybook about the life cycle of a sunflower titled “Every Seed Counts.”
“The educational experience of raising butterflies, provided by International Paper, was something that the students will never forget,” school officials said.
Students learned about the life cycle of the butterfly because they watched the transformation day by day from the small caterpillar state all the way through the metamorphosis to a butterfly.
“They watched each stage of butterfly development carefully and enjoyed the educational experience,” officials said. “We really appreciated the opportunity to provide this hands-on science experience for our students.”
