COURTLAND – Joy Johnson Ellis, 81, wife of the Rev. Edmund E. Ellis passed away July 23, 2022. Mrs. Ellis was born in Castor, Louisana and was a daughter of the late William Lee and Mable Riser Johnson. She was also predeceased by a son, Andrew Edmund “Andy” Ellis.
Mrs. Ellis had a bachelors degree from Louisiana College and a masters degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She was a retired special education teacher from the Franklin Public School System after 15 years and had previously taught 15 years in the Southampton County Public School System. She was a 20 year member of the Drewryville Ruritan Club and longtime member of Thomas Memorial Baptist Church in Drewryville.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 56 years, Rev. Edmund Emery Ellis; one son, Lee Warner Ellis (Faye) of Galax, Virginia; two sisters, Peggy Cloud (Lehane) of Shreveport, Louisana, Becky Castles (Joel) of Winnsboro, South Carolina; two brothers, Joe Johnson (Ann) of Bossier City, Louisana, Billy Johnson (Ruth Anne) of Elkins, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Rachael Morse (Matt), Sarah Brazzale (Ryan), Scott Ellis (Liz); two great-grandchildren, Conor Brazzale and Lily Brazzale.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 31 in Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, Drewryville, with Pastor Mary Wyles officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Thomas Memorial Baptist Church, Drewryville, VA 23844.
