FRANKLIN – Mary Eustace Smith, 83, passed away Sept. 13, 2022 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born in Lost Creek, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late John Ross Eustace Sr. and Mary Avis Eustace. She was also predeceased by her husband, John Daniel Smith Jr., a son, J.D. Smith III and a sister, Broaddus Ann Eustace Allen.

Mary grew up in Potomac Mills, Virginia and was a graduate of Longwood University. She was a longtime teacher of typing, business and shorthand at Franklin High School and an avid Virginia Tech fan. She was a member of Ephasus Christian Church in Foneswood, Virginia.

Mary enjoyed attending Black Creek Baptist Church and Bible study at Franklin Congregational Christian Church. She also enjoyed her time and friends while living at Bradley Creek in Wilmington.

Left to cherish her memory is a daughter, Dr. Kathy Smith and her husband, Mike Rhoades and their five children; her daughter-in-law, Yvette Smith; her grandson, J. Daniel Smith IV and her dog, Marco.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept.16 in Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Hyatt officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home and suggests that memorial donations be made to Lower Cape Fear Life Care, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N.C. 28401.
