Indians crush Amelia County Raiders 42-7

The Southampton High School varsity football team was at home Friday, Sept. 23, when it claimed an impressive 42-7 win over the Amelia County High School Raiders.
It was a good night for the Indians, who were playing their first game using a brand new lighting system. Contractors have been hard at work at the field to provide a top-of-the-line lighting system that looked very good.
But those new lights didn’t look good for the Raiders, as they showed from the start of the game. The Indians took control early in the game, and by halftime the home team was up 26-0.
After halftime the Indians continued to punish the Raiders on offense, while their defense did its job in keeping the Raiders scoreless. It was late in the fourth quarter before the Raiders were able to get on the scoreboard.
Alvin Hicks Jr. led the Indians in rushing with a total of 283 yards and three rushing touchdowns. Jayden White followed him with 167 yards and two passing touchdowns. Steven McClenny and Jaeden Warren also put six points apiece on the scoreboard.
After the game, Southampton Head Coach Travis Parker said, “We are coming off of a disappointing loss to Colonial Heights. We really worked hard this week, and we just wanted to come back and put two halves together. I think that we were able to do that tonight.
“I am proud of the guys in a way that they were depending on each other in doing what they have to do and to be able to come out here and execute,” Parker continued. “I think that is what we did here tonight.”
He noted that the Indians (2-2) still have some things they need to straighten out.
“We are still getting too many penalties, and we are still making some mental mistakes,” he said. “So, we are going to go back to the drawing board and continue to work. We’ve got Sussex (Central High School) coming here on Thursday, but we will continue to work, but we know that it will not be an easy road. But this was a good win for us, and we will continue to keep the momentum going.”
Kickoff against the visiting Tigers (2-2) on Thursday, Sept. 29, is set for 7 p.m.
