Early in the opening quarter of the varsity football game Thursday, Sept. 29, between the Sussex Central High School Tigers and the host Southampton High School Indians, the Tigers defense showed strength as it forced a safety. That would be Sussex Central’s only score until late in the fourth quarter. The Indians cranked up their offense as they earned a 28-8 win over the Tigers.
The home team was ahead 14-2 at the half following two touchdown runs by senior running back Alvin Hicks Jr.
Scores were added by the Indians in the second half, as senior quarterback Jayden White connected on touchdown passes to senior tight end Juelz Cooper and senior slotback Jaeden Warren.
“Our defense played lights out for the first three quarters,” Southampton Head Coach Travis Parker said after the game. “Our special teams did a lot better than last week. Our offense is still improving each week. We are taking one game at a time.
“Every win from here on out is a big win for us,” he continued. “As long as we don’t do things to beat ourselves, we have a chance to do well in every game. The players and coaches are working hard during the week, so I am confident that we will execute better and better each week.”
He noted that the Friday, Oct. 7, showdown between Southampton (3-2) and visiting Brunswick High School (3-3) will be a tough one. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
