An unusual two-off-day government work week during the second week of November will lead to some changes to city of Franklin services and closed government offices in both Franklin and Southampton County.
Franklin City Manager Amanda C. Jarratt noted during the City Council meeting Monday, Oct. 24, that city offices will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 8, for Election Day, as well as Friday, Nov. 11, for Veterans Day.
“It’s unusual for us to have two days off in a week, and so I’m trying to go ahead and get that word out,” she said.
She then went on to note that Franklin will be running a double trash route on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and Monday, Nov. 14.
“So because we’re closed on Tuesday, the trash route will run a double route on Wednesday, and then because we’re closed on Friday, they will run a double route the following Monday,” she said.
The Southampton County administration building will be closed on Election Day and Veterans Day, but the collection sites in the county will not be affected by those closures.
“The collection sites in Southampton will run the same schedule they normally do on those days,” Southampton County Administrative Assistant Tina Bradshaw said after consulting with Public Works Director Hart Council. “Very rarely are they affected by office closures. The only time they really are is Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day.”
Schedules for the collection sites are available at www.SouthamptonCounty.org. Scroll down to a list of links on the far left-hand side of the page and click on “Solid Waste Brochure (site hours & accepted items).”
Bradshaw noted that while the collection sites will still be open on Election Day and Veterans Day, Public Utilities will not be, so in the event of emergencies with water or sewer, citizens should contact the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office at 757-653-2100 where someone will be on call.
