Name: Marlin Sharp
Age: 67
Education: Bachelor of Science in Bible; Master of Applied Ministry
Occupation: field director – STAND (Staying True to America’s National Destiny), Chesapeake
Years living in Windsor: Two-plus (June 2020)
Prior elected offices held: President – Landstown Community Civic League, Virginia Beach
- Can you briefly summarize why you decided to run for office?
Since my wife and I moved to Windsor in 2020, we have enjoyed our life here. I believe that every citizen should be a positive influence in the community. Serving on Town Council is a way that I can contribute in a positive way to the Windsor community.
- What would you list as your primary qualifications for this office?
I am a resident of Windsor. I care about my community. I pay taxes. I attend Windsor Town Council meetings on a regular basis.
- What should Windsor’s top priority be right now?
I would like to see a greater emphasis on attracting new businesses to spur economic growth.
- What’s one thing you’d like to see change in terms of Windsor’s town government?
I think that Windsor town government functions pretty well. I would like to see what some new blood can do to encourage greater community involvement. I would like to see more citizens attending Town Council meetings.
- What can Windsor do to deter vandalism of its parks and facilities?
I don’t see vandalism as a huge problem. One thing that could be done is more parental involvement when young people are involved in any negative behavior.
- Does Windsor need more growth and development? If so, how can the town help achieve this?
I would like to see slow residential growth. I am not in favor of rapid growth like we are seeing in some areas of Suffolk. As I said above, I would like to see more of an emphasis on business growth. One possible area that might need some attention is more affordable housing. The only low-income housing right now is the trailer parks. We might want to look at some apartments or townhouses.
- What can be done to improve community-police relations in Windsor in the wake of ongoing litigation pertaining to a 2020 traffic stop where two WPD officers held Army Lieutenant Caron Nazario at gunpoint and pepper-sprayed him?
The overall community-police relationship in Windsor is very positive. This one incident with Lt. Nazario was blown out of proportion by the media and made to look like a racial incident, which, if you look at it in detail, was more of a situation of a person who refused to follow instructions from the officers who made a valid traffic stop. Chief Riddle and the Windsor Police Department have my full support. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgBMnJyOiT0&t=7s
