Franklin High School’s varsity boys basketball team blew out host Central Lunenburg High School on Monday, Dec. 12, to extend its record to 5-0 at the outset of the 2022-23 season.

The Broncos defeated the Chargers 60-20.

The rout followed a week in which Franklin went 3-0 against Tri-Rivers District opponents, starting with a 49-42 road win against Greensville County High School on Monday, Dec. 5.

“Our defensive effort was on another level,” Broncos Head Coach Robby Cutchins said, referencing the Greensville County game. “We were able to hold the defending Tri-Rivers District regular season and tournament champion to only four points in the first quarter.”

Franklin led 25-16 at halftime. 

“(It was) just an overall great effort, defensively, in a very tough place to play,” Cutchins said.

Senior point guard Derrick Perry led the Broncos with 18 points. Other key Franklin contributors included junior center Chaevon Torrance, with seven points and 11 rebounds, and senior wing Jordan Myrick, with nine points and eight boards.

On Wednesday, Dec. 7, Franklin visited Brunswick High School and edged out the Bulldogs 48-46.

Cutchins credited Torrance with “a big-time performance against a big Brunswick front court.”

Torrance finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Franklin senior forward Solomon Moody ended up with nine points, with some of them coming late in the ballgame. Junior shooting guard Kaden Bailey contributed eight points, while Myrick and Perry each had seven.

Cutchins noted that Franklin turned in “just another phenomenal performance on the road against another really good basketball team in Brunswick.”

To close out the week, the Broncos hosted Windsor High School on Friday, Dec. 9, and managed to double the scoring output of the Dukes in a 70-35 victory.

“This was a big game for us to be able to get back home in front of our crowd and perform after coming off two huge wins for the program,” Cutchins said. “Windsor was 3-0 coming in, so we knew we had to match the level from our previous two games. Fortunately, we matched that and excelled some more, being able to get everybody some playing time.”

The coach said that Torrance turned in another excellent performance, recording 18 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

Cutchins also highlighted Perry, who finished with 18 points and five steals, Myrick, who had 12 points and five assists, and Moody, who generated nine points and nine boards.

“I’m so proud of the boys for being able to battle adversity this week with the loss of a beloved classmate who we will keep close to our hearts going forward,” Cutchins said. “But not only being able to step on the floor and play but being able to perform at the level we did this week — especially in some really tough gyms to play in — and come out victorious says a lot about us. I think this speaks volumes for these young men; I’m so proud of them.”

Franklin (5-0, 3-0 Tri-Rivers) is set to return to action Wednesday, Dec. 14, when it hosts Surry County High School at 7 p.m. The Broncos will then host Appomattox Regional Governor’s School on Friday, Dec. 16, also at 7 p.m.
