Camp Community College’s baseball and softball programs have started their 2023 seasons.

A college news release noted that both teams are competing at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III level this season. Both teams were participating in Division II last year. The change evens the playing field for both teams and allows for more flexible scheduling, according to Baseball Head Coach Daniel Rollins.

“In Division II, we had to play 42 conference games,” he said. “In Division III, we only have to schedule 24 games within the conference, so we are able to choose more teams we can play. Also, when we competed in Division II, we were playing against teams that had a full slate of scholarship players (24). Moving to Division III evens the field for us.”

Excitement is building for Hurricanes baseball as the team received votes in the NJCAA Division III preseason top 15 poll. The Hurricanes opened the season at Spartanburg Methodist College on Saturday, Feb. 4. They fell 9-8, and though they opened Sunday, Feb. 5, with a 15-14 loss to the SMC Pioneers, they won the back half of the doubleheader, 4-3. Their home opener will be Wednesday, Feb. 15, against Pitt Community College. 

The CCC baseball team plays its home games at Repair Tech Field on the Franklin Campus.

Hurricanes softball was also ready to take the field in February. The team, led by Head Coach Sean Wade, opened the season with a doubleheader at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, on Sunday, Feb. 5. The Hawks prevailed 2-0 and 10-2.

Camp’s home opener on Feb. 25 will include games against Brunswick Community College and Virginia Peninsula Community College. 

The CCC softball team plays its home games at Armory Field in Franklin.
