The Windsor Gymnastics Training Center’s XCEL competition team put forth a strong showing at the recent Diamond Invitational in Chesapeake.

The team earned third place in the XCEL Silver Division, and on the individual level, Windsor Gymnastics’ Caroline Slaba earned the first place medal all around for the Silver Age 10 Division and the Silver Session.

The invitational, which ran from March 25-26, helped prepare the Windsor Gymnastics team members for the state- and regional-level competitions to come.

“The Diamond Invitational isn’t one of the biggest meets we attend, but it is large, popular and well run, hosted by Hurricane Gymnastics in Chesapeake,” said Windsor Gymnastics Association President Alisha Graney. “We have attended several years in a row.

“I feel that all of our gymnasts gave their best effort, and it showed in their scores and rankings,” she added. “They truly did an amazing job, and it was a great weekend for everyone.”

Across the six area gymnasts who competed, Windsor XCEL brought home seven gold medals, seven silver medals and a trio of bronze medals.

Graney explained that the Windsor Gymnastics Training Center’s XCEL competition team had three levels compete. Competing at the silver level were Slaba, Aislinn Graney, Holly Cook and Aryah Finch. Competing at the gold level was Josie Griffin, and competing at the platinum level was Karli Woody.

“Caroline was our standout athlete for this event,” Alisha Graney said. “This is her first year competing, and she took home the first place medal all around for the Silver Age 10 Division. Not only that, but she had the highest all around score for the entire Silver Session (ages 7-14 combined). She took home a special reward, a diamond necklace, for this accomplishment.”

Slaba placed first for bars and second place for floor. She was fifth on the beam.

In the 14- to 15-year-old division, Woody placed first on the vault, the bars and the beam and second on floor. She earned first place all around 14-15 division and second place all around Platinum Combined Session.

In the 9- to 11-year-old division, Griffin placed second on the vault, bars and beam. She earned second place all around 9-11 division and second place all around Gold Combined Session.

In the 11- to 14-year-old division, Cook placed first on the beam and third on the bars and floor. She earned second place all around 11-14 division and second place all around Silver Combined Session.

In the 11-14 division, Aislinn Graney placed third on the beam, fourth on the bars and fifth on floor. She earned fourth place all around 11-14 division and fourth place all around Silver Combined Session.

In the 11-14 division, Finch placed fifth on the bars and sixth on the beam. She earned ninth all around 11-14 Session.

“Now the girls are focusing on the Virginia State Meet, which takes place in May at the Hampton Convention Center,” Alisha Graney said. “After that, a few of our gymnasts will head to Pennsylvania to compete in XCEL Regionals in June.

“We are always looking for support from our community to help fund the team, and anyone who wants to assist can reach out through our Facebook page,” she added.

“We have a registered 501(c)(3) to help support these dedicated and hardworking young athletes,” she said.
