Isle of Wight County sheriff’s deputies have charged a Suffolk man with murder after an autopsy deemed a reported death from natural causes to have actually been a homicide.
Deputies arrested 74-year-old Mark Wayne Honaker late Thursday night in connection with the murder of 54-year-old Steven William March of Carrsville.
Deputies had discovered March’s body at a residence in Carrsville after being dispatched to investigate a possible death from cardiac arrest. After the preliminary autopsy report deemed the manner of death suspicious, investigators determined March actually died of gunshot wounds from a small-caliber weapon.
According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were able to rule out suicide as a cause of death based on the autopsy, and obtained a search warrant for Honker’s home following their initial interviews. They said they found unspecified evidence connecting Honker to the victim.
Honker is being held without bond at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail. He faces a second-degree murder charge, as well as charges of breaking and entering with the intent to commit murder, and use or display of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
The investigation is ongoing.
