A two-vehicle crash occurred early Friday morning, June 23, on U.S. Route 58 in Drewryville resulting in a fatality.
The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release that deputies responded at approximately 3:51 a.m. to the area of U.S. Route 58 westbound near Sykes Drive in reference to a motor vehicle crash.
Police said the crash was caused when a tractor-trailer traveling westbound collided with the rear of a Ford Fusion that was almost at a stop in the lane of travel. The driver and only occupant of the Fusion, Charles Patrick Payne, 26, of Crosby, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not report any injuries.
Deputies are continuing to investigate the accident, the release stated.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not impaired and speed was not a factor, police said, but they noted that the weather was a contributing factor in this crash.
The accident did cause lane closures for extended periods of time, police said. The Virginia Department of Transportation responded to assist with traffic control. All lanes were reopened around 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
“No other information is available for release at this time,” police said.
