WINDSOR – Wesley Floyd Garris, 84, passed away Aug. 10, 2023, in his home with family by his side. A lifelong resident of Windsor, he was the son of the late Wilson Floyd Garris and Eula Crocker Garris.
Wesley was a graduate of Windsor High School and the Newport News Apprentice School. He was a retired nuclear engineer in the Quality Control Department of Newport News Shipyard. Wesley was a member of Purdie Masonic Lodge #170 AF&AM. Wesley served on the Windsor Town Council for over 40 years as councilman, Vice Mayor and Mayor. In 2013, he was honored for his dedication and years of service by having the Wesley F. Garris Event Park established in his honor. He was a charter member of the Windsor Volunteer Fire Department and longtime member and deacon of Windsor Baptist Church.
Wesley will be remembered by his loved ones for his love and commitment to his family, church, town and the Outer Banks. His legacy will live on.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 63 years, Cynthia Keeter Garris; two daughters, Susan Lynette Flemmons (John) of Glen Allen and Amy Leigh Garris of Smithfield; three sisters, Nelda Copeland (Johnny) of Windsor, Emogene Babb (Jimmy) of Orbit and Nola Mumford (Roger) of Windsor; four grandchildren, Mackenzie Irene Flemmons, Garrett Wesley Flemmons, Samuel Mason Weaver and Wesley Garris Weaver; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 14 in Windsor Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Alderman officiating. Burial with Masonic honors will follow in Windsor Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial at the church. Memorial donations may be made to any favorite charity.
