COURTLAND – Wesley Grover Joyner, 71, passed away Aug. 12, 2023 at his home with his family by his bedside. Wesley was born in Petersburg and reared in Capron. He was a 1972 graduate of Greensville County High School, a member of Courtland United Methodist Church and Indian Town Hunt Club.

Wesley had been a grounds supervisor for the Virginia Department of Corrections, part owner of W&J Enterprises, former maintenance supervisor for Hancock Peanut Company, former maintenance supervisor for the Mid Atlantic Cotton Gin and ended his working career for Southampton Farms. When he wasn’t on the job, he was piddling in his shop, hunting and fishing or loving on his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 49 years, Kay Saunders Joyner; a daughter, Susan J. Fowler (Travis); two sons, Stephen Wesley Joyner (Lauren) and Robert Wesley Joyner (Allie); six grandchildren, Jake and Ian Fowler, Brylee and Asher Joyner, Waverly and Addee Joyner; two sisters, Carolyn J. Nurney and Charlene J. Davis (Tommy); sister-in-law, Linda D. Joyner; two aunts, Flora Ann Williams and Topsy Williams and a large extended family and host of friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles LaGrange “Charlie” Joyner and Erma Dale Williams Joyner and a brother, Charles L. “Granger” Joyner Jr.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at Courtland United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Harrington officiating. The burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Wright Funeral Home in Franklin from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday and suggests memorial donations be made to Courtland United Methodist Church.
