The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Inc. PowWow will be held Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Surry Parks and Recreation Center, which is located on Highway 10 at Highway 31 — 205 Enos Farm Drive in Surry.
A tribe news release noted that the event will feature two days of native dancing, drumming, historical presentations, children’s activities, crafts, demonstrations, health information and food.
The PowWow, led by Master of Ceremonies Rick Kelly, will feature vendors, storytelling, educational exhibits, Native American cooking and community service information.
ON SATURDAY
- John “Blackfeather” Jefferies (Occaneechi Saponi) will demonstrate Native American survival techniques.
- Dr. Buck Woodard, noted historian, will be presenting at the Nottoway History Booth “The 18th Century Indian Trader” in which he discusses the politics and economics experienced during the colonial period and how the Nottoway allied with Virginia in matters of trade, war and diplomacy. Particular attention will be paid to the fur trade.
ON SUNDAY
- The Vietnam Era Veterans Inter-Tribal Association Honor-Color Guard, Washington, D.C., Chapter, will participate. The Honor-Color Guard was founded in 1982 by the late Max Little (Seminole). The current commander is Steve Miller (Tsalagi).
BOTH DAYS
- The Hampton VA Medical Center Rural Health Mobile Van will be on-site to assist veterans with connecting to the Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers.
Gates will open at 10 a.m., and the Grand Entry begins at noon on Saturday and at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
There will be separate rates for general admission and for seniors (ages 65 and older) and young people (ages 13-17). Children ages 12 and younger will be admitted for free when they are accompanied by an adult.
No pets are allowed, only service animals.
Attendees are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
