CAPRON – Elder Loretta Artis, of Capron, transitioned into eternal peace on Oct. 6, 2023 in Sentara Leigh Hospital. She was born in Southampton County on Nov. 18, 1958 to William L. and Helen Davis Artis.

Although Loretta spent many years at her home church, Pine Level Baptist Church, she became a member of House of Refuge for Healing, Deliverance and Restoration. Elder Loretta was the church clerk, member of Distribution Hub Inc. and Sunday school teacher.

Elder Loretta was a 1977 graduate of Southampton High School. She continued her academic journey and enrolled in Paul D. Camp Community College. She received a bachelor’s degree from Saint Paul College and her master’s in education at Concordia University. Elder Loretta was a teacher in Southampton County Public School System.

Loretta will always be remembered and cherished by three sons, Brandon Artis, Brenton Artis (Asha) and Brian Artis; her parents William and Helen Artis; two sisters, Barbara Harris, Maria Bradshaw; five brothers, William Artis (Vicki), Stanley Artis (Jeanette), Tony Artis, Bruce Artis (Murial) and Milton Artis (Charlene). Loretta was blessed with nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A public viewing for Elder Artis will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 3 – 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 14, a celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. at Pine Level Baptist Church, 23035 Church Street in Capron with Apostle Bruce Artis delivering the eulogy; the Rev. H. Keith Rose is pastor. The committal and benediction will follow in the church cemetery. Service provided by the professional and caring staff of Wm. M.
